What is a Youth Minister? Not a Babysitter

From the Series: What Is a Youth Minister?

The World Doesn't Treat Them Like Babies

In modern churches the young people don’t mingle with the older generation as much as they used to.  Sunday mornings they have their separate class.  Wednesday evenings they have their own service.  In a lot of churches the only service the high school students are seen by parents in Sunday evenings.

For a lot of youth pastors, one of their biggest pet peeves are parents that think they are teenager sitters.  As a youth pastor you have to fight the assumption, not by everyone, that you’re just entertaining the teenagers so the adults can have distraction-less church.

How many times have you been frustrated by this stereotype?  How many times have you wanted to write a 30 page manifesto to parents about the things the kids are facing in school and show them the dire situation teens are facing? Continue Reading…

Event Idea: Friday Night Lights/OUT!

(Part of the Youth Ministry Events Ideas Series)

I figured I would post this idea, which is an event I am hosting for my youth group tomorrow night.  The night is going to be interesting to say the least, but it should be fun.  I hope it will be fun.

Here is the event information:

A lockin for the guys only.  We are going to lock ourselves into the gym at about 8pm.  The first thing we are going to do is grill some steaks and eat some good food.  Then we are going to have a time of prayer and a special lesson just for guys.  Then, we are going to spend the rest of the night playing a series of games.

Schedule:

8pm: Grill Time

9pm: Prayer / Lesson

10pm: Can’t Beat Youth Pastor
This is where I’m going to take all these Xbox players to school on an old PC game.  Whoever can beat me wins a prize.

11pm: SWAT
We are going to lock all the outside doors to the gym and turn off all the lights.  Everyone gets an airsoft gun, goggles, and a flash light.  The group will be split into teams and put in separate areas of the gym.  The object is to hunt down all the other group and shoot them with an airsoft gun.  We will also play capture the flag and any other crazy games we come up with using a dark gym and airsoft guns.

Whenever: More xBox and computer games

After that: probably sleep.

Should be a fun night of relationship building with the young people.  If you have any events like this please let me know your great ideas!

Free Ministry Graphics: Creative Swap

(Part of the Free Youth Ministry Resources Blog Series)

If you’re like most of us, you struggle to come up with good artwork for your services, sermons, and series.  To teens, most of the time, attention is achieved through dynamic visuals.  Sadly, it’s true that your blue text on a white background is probably going to put them to sleep.  Powerpoint animations also don’t go very far in captivating a teen audience.

Face it, you need help!  That’s what we’re here for.  Check out Creation Swap.  They offer free photoshop files, photos, and slides for your ministry needs.  They have over 3,000 free offerings as well as some premium items for purchase.

Youth Carwash IdeasThis may be an old idea to you.  If it is, leave a comment below with an awesome new idea!

We all have spent time at the carwash. We’ve done donation washes, we’ve done $5 washes, and some of us have even done full detail washes.  It’s hard work.  It always makes money, but it’s hard work.  How would you like to squeeze even more money out of a car wash?

ALL The Stage Design Ideas You’ll Ever Need

As a blogger, sometimes it’s hurting on the old pride to link to someone else knowing that your readers might like them better and never come back to see you.  Oh well, that’s the chance you take I guess.  This website is just too good not to pass on.

Student Ministry Management Tools

Student Ministry Management SoftwareThis book is invaluable.  I have already talked about it on our podcast before, however, I wanted to give you a little more information about this awesome tool.

It is a book, but not a reading style book.  This is more of a reference book.  Do you want to know how a youth pastor should plan his week?  It’s in there.  Do you want to know how a youth pastor should decorate his office?  It’s in there.  Do you want to know how to keep your volunteers free from trouble?  There are forms in there.  Do you need an insurance form for the next youth trip?  It’s in there.

The book deals with each and every aspect of youth ministry without leaving much uncovered.  The last half of the book is filled with pages of forms you can use to keep a good documentation and paper trail of all the necessary and important aspects of your youth ministry.  But that’s not the best part!

The best part is that it also comes with a youth ministry management software cd.  This software keeps track of all the things you have to do to administrate your student ministry. It keeps up with events, it gives you all those forms in PDF format so you can print them off over and over, and it also gives you a management database for all of your students and their information.

You really should check this book out, I highly recommend it.  Get it cheap here.

Add Pop to Your Stage With a 3D Logo

Some student ministries have the luxury of fat budgets and lots of tech toys but, if you’re like me, you struggle to purchase any of the flashy gadgets.  Sometimes it takes a creative approach to make a youth room cool.  You may have your stumin logo on the back wall of your stage or on a wall in your youth room painted in just one color.  However, a little bit of work and for a very low price you can take that boring wall and make something that really pops!  A 3D logo.

It’s not as hard as it sounds.

Here is what you will need:

1. Some foam board.  You can find these at art supply stores or somewhere like Home Depot.  If you get the construction supply kind of foam, make sure you get the kind without a plastic coating.  If you do, you will have to peel it off.

Make sure to remember that you can’t use normal glues and paints on foam without some sort of coating.  Paint will eat right through it so make sure you get latex paint and water-based coatings.

2. An overhead projector.  A video projector will work if you have your logo on a computer.

3. A pencil

4. A really sharp knife or jigsaw. (If you are lucky enough to have a hot wire foam cutter, use it.)

5. A really fine sandpaper

6. Rope Light in your favorite color. (They make some led light sticks that you can use if you don’t like rope lights.)

7. 2′x4′ blocks

Note: The bigger you want your logo to be, the bigger the foam board needs to be.  I suggest a 4′x8′.

Here’s What To Do:

  • Put the foam board against the wall and secure it in place.
  • Project the image of your log onto the foam board.
  • With a pencil, outline your logo.
  • With the knife, or hot wire, cut the logo out using the pencil outline as a guide.  Take your time, foam is not the easiest thing to work with.
  • Sand the edges of your logo cutout to make it smooth, as smooth as possible.
  • Paint the whole thing front and back with a latex primer.
  • Paint the whole thing with your favorite color.  I suggest one coloring it because the second color comes into play with the lights.  If you have a talented artist at your disposal you can get as detailed as you want.
  • Glue the 2′x4′ blocks to the backside of your logo.
  • Attach the logo to the wall using the blocks to nail/screw/hang into place. This will have your logo on the wall with a 2″ gap between the back of it and the wall.
  • Put the rope lights behind the logo and turn them on.  You should have a pretty cool 3D logo effect.

We are fixing to do this in my youth room and I will post pictures when I have it completed.

Give Your Podium an iPad

ipulpit_withBible-300x214

I know this is already posted on church39.com but I have to post it over here as well.  What is a youth room without an iPad podium? If you are like most youth ministers you already have tossed the original iPad away for a newer, sleeker version.  You like to keep on the cutting edge of technology.

Admittedly the iPad isn’t just a mobile gaming system. Nor is it a tool to help you sit on the dock of the bay wasting time. It has become an essential tool in my student ministry. From keeping my notes and calendar all in one place to making sure our website is up and running smoothly, the iPad is irreplaceable.

Why not gear up for your use of the ipad? You’re looking at about $600.00 bucks for an iPad podium like this.
